It all started in 1843 as a way to grow more sweet potatoes. Today, the Tater Day Festival has grown into a long-standing tradition, one that the town of Benton and surrounding areas look forward to all year long. The festival is a days-long celebration and one that may be worth adding to your Kentucky bucket list.
This year the town of Benton, Kentucky will host the 174th Tater Day celebration. If you don’t know what a “tater” is, then you are probably not from this classic Kentucky city. This festival began as a way to celebrate the beginning of spring and farmers would trade sweet potato slips to help with growing, hence “Tater” Day!

The highlight of this days-long event is the parade, which draws nearly everyone from surrounding areas. This year, the parade will be held on Monday, April 3rd and will surely be just as spectacular as previous years. Expect to see antique cars, floats, horses, clowns, marching bands and even Miss Tater herself, recently crowned at the festival.

Another big attraction is the plethora of rides and games. These will be in action the weekend before the parade and will definitely draw a big crowd.
