The Occidental Hotel has been practicing the art of hospitality for almost 140 years, so they’re pretty good at it. When you check in, fine dining, a famous saloon, and comfortable, inviting rooms are all part of the package. Plus, you’ll join the long list of prominent guests that include presidents, authors, and infamous outlaws.

The minute you walk in, it’s obvious that this is no ordinary hotel.

After all, through the years, guests have included Teddy Roosevelt, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Ernest Hemmingway, Calamity Jane, and Buffalo Bill Cody, to name a few.

Much of the original details have been left in place and the decor is always period-appropriate, with the addition of a few modern conveniences. Plus, every room from the lobby to the guest rooms and the restaurant are all decorated with antiques.

For guests who prefer more privacy or want to stay longer, the Stewart Clear Creek Cabin is available. It’s not built on to the hotel, but is on the banks of Clear Creek, only a few minutes from downtown Buffalo.

Named for the Owen Wister novel “The Virginian,” the Occidental’s dining room offers tender buffalo and beef steaks including prime rib and filet mignon, along with seafood and other delicacies that are appropriately described as “Fine Western Dining.”

Much of the hotel has been refurbished but, like the Occidental Saloon, the goal was to retain authenticity.
